Improving decision making for novice investors

The problem

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) identified a post-pandemic influx of novice investors chasing high risk trends including crypto and NFT’s.  impulsive and risky investment behaviour was driven by Fear of missing out (FOMO) and social buzz. The FCA wanted to help people understand the risks beyond the ‘investment hype’ to make more informed decisions, particularly around high-risk assets.

The solution

We created the Hype Type Revealer, an interactive tool simulating hyped investment scenarios to help users recognise risky triggers, which may influence their decisions. Research revealed that FOMO and social contagion drive risky investments .  To address this, IAW partnered with MHP Group to create an interactive digital tool simulating hype scenarios found on social media and trading platforms. The tool, refined through interviews and a quantitative study with over 600 UK investors, tested and improved behavioural strategies to help users avoid these triggers. This interactive, mobile-first simulation, mirrors real group-chat investment conversations and identifies a user’s personal “Hype Type” to encourage more reflective, informed investing.
The Hype Type Revealer tool can be accessed by on the FCA page: fca.org.uk/investsmart/hype-type-revealer.

The impact

In testing with over 600 retail investors, the training intervention within the tool reduced high-risk investment decisions by an incredible 34.9% after seven days.

Investments in lower-risk options, such as ISAs and government bonds, rose by 32.3%.

Nearly two-thirds (63.8%) of users found the tool engaging and enjoyable.

“The Hype Type Revealer uses behavioural science to help investors recognise when hype is influencing their decisions. By simulating real messages and providing targeted training, it aims to change habits and support smarter choices. This is the latest step in our bold InvestSmart campaign, which focuses on practical tools to help consumers make informed investment decisions.”
